About

Will started his science journey at Balliol college Oxford, studying chemistry before transitioning into a PhD in computational biology. He then moved into microbiology, studying bacterial warfare as a PostDoc in the labs of Kevin Foster (Oxford), and Laurie Comstock (Havard Med). He is now a Wellcome-funded independent fellow at Manchester University, studying the evolutionary biology of microbial attack and defence with Michael Brockhurst.

Will’s research lies at the intersection of molecular microbiology, evolution, and biotechnology, with a core focus on the mechanisms and applications of bacterial anti-competitor toxins. Beyond the lab, he is two-times winner of the Lady Gaga award for excellence in fancy dress.

The Smith Lab

The Smith lab is located in the Michael Smith building on the University of Manchester campus in Manchester, UK. We are part of the School of Biological Sciences and Division of Evolution, Infection, and Genomics (EIGEN). The Smith lab is an activate member of the Microbial Evolution Research at Manchester (MERMan) group, a collective of 15 PIs and >60 research staff.
