This week the Smith Lab hosted sixth form students from across Greater Manchester for some hands-on bioscience lab experience.
Armed with pipettes and COSHH forms, we embarked on a whistle-stop tour of the Smith lab and Manchester Microbiology as a whole. In 2 days we covered:
- Tailocin PCR with Dr. Qi;
- Paramecium microscopy with the Brockhurst / Cameron groups;
- Organ-on-a-chip microfluidics with the Tank Lab;
- Anaerobic chambers and bioreactors with the Nixon group.
Most importantly, there were 3-D printed jellyfish as a reward for 3 successful diagnostic PCRs!

Big thanks to the students for their engagement and enthusiasm – you guys were fantastic and we hope to see you back at Manchester!
