New vacancies opening!

Delighted to announce that the lab is recruiting!

Bacteria poison prey and rivals using a diverse arsenal of weaponised toxins, spanning a huge diversity of molecular and interaction lengthscales. But which of these weapons are most advantageous to invest in? How many do we we expect bacteria to carry?

We’re looking for a talented and enthusiastic PhD candidate interested in developing computer simulations and evolutionary theory to understand when and why microbes evolve to fight with different toxins. Some experience of computational modelling, and an interest in microbial evolution, are highly desirable.

Further details and application portal here. Please reach out to me if you’d like to discuss applications.

Deadline: Nov. 1st 2026 for April 2027 entry.

The Smith Lab

The Smith lab is located in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, an award-winning interdisciplinary centre for bioscience discovery and innovation.

Our research lies at the intersection of molecular microbiology, evolution, and biotechnology, with a core focus on the mechanisms and applications of bacterial anti-competitor toxins.

The Smith lab is also an activate member of the Microbial Evolution Research at Manchester (MERMan) group, a collective of 15 PIs and >60 research staff.
